Hyperliquid Leverage Guide 2026: Max Leverage & Liquidation
How leverage works on Hyperliquid: max leverage per asset, margin tiers, changing leverage, liquidation distance by leverage, effective leverage and position sizing.
The short version: on Hyperliquid, leverage is set per asset, capped by an asset-specific maximum (up to 40x on the most liquid perps, much lower on small caps), and it only changes how much margin you post, not your PnL per dollar of notional. Higher leverage means less margin, a closer liquidation price, and less room for error. Size positions by risk, not by the leverage slider.
How leverage works on Hyperliquid
Leverage is the ratio between your position's notional value and the margin backing it. A 10,000 USDC BTC long at 10x needs 1,000 USDC of initial margin; at 5x it needs 2,000 USDC. In both cases a 1% move in BTC is a 100 USDC gain or loss. What changes is how much of your account is committed and how far price can move before you are liquidated.
Hyperliquid lets you choose leverage per asset and per margin mode. You can run 3x on ETH in cross margin and 10x on SOL in isolated margin at the same time. If you are unsure which mode to use, read our isolated vs cross margin guide first.
Maximum leverage per asset
Each perp has its own maximum leverage, set by Hyperliquid based on liquidity and volatility. The majors (BTC, ETH) sit at the top of the range, mid caps lower, and newly listed or thin markets often at 3x to 10x. Some markets also use margin tiers: as your position grows, the maximum leverage allowed for the extra size drops, so very large positions need proportionally more margin. Because these values change, always check the leverage selector in the order panel or the meta info endpoint (field maxLeverage) instead of relying on old screenshots.
How to change leverage
- Open the market on app.hyperliquid.xyz and click the leverage value next to the margin mode in the order panel.
- Move the slider or type a value up to the asset's maximum and confirm.
- With an open position you can usually increase leverage freely, but decreasing it requires enough free collateral to cover the higher margin. In isolated mode you can also add or remove margin directly, which is often the cleaner way to move your liquidation price.
Bots do the same thing with the updateLeverage exchange action (asset, isCross, leverage). Agent wallets are allowed to send it; see our API wallet guide.
Leverage and liquidation price: worked example
Ignoring fees and funding, an isolated long gets liquidated roughly when losses eat the margin down to the maintenance requirement. Maintenance margin on Hyperliquid is about half of the initial margin at max leverage, so as a rule of thumb:
| Leverage (BTC long at 100,000) | Margin for 10,000 USDC notional | Approx. adverse move to liquidation |
|---|---|---|
| 2x | 5,000 USDC | ~49% |
| 5x | 2,000 USDC | ~19% |
| 10x | 1,000 USDC | ~9% |
| 20x | 500 USDC | ~4% |
| 40x | 250 USDC | ~1.3% |
These are illustrative numbers for isolated margin with a 40x-max asset; the exact liquidation price depends on the asset's maintenance margin, fees and funding, and in cross margin on your whole account. The app shows the real estimate before you submit. For the mechanics in detail see the liquidation guide.
Effective leverage vs selected leverage
The number on the slider is a cap, not what you are actually running. In cross margin, your effective leverage is total open notional divided by account equity. A trader with 10,000 USDC equity, 20x selected, and a 15,000 USDC position is effectively at 1.5x. That is the number that matters for risk, and it moves as PnL changes your equity. Hyperfolio shows positions, notional and equity together for any address, so you can see effective exposure across wallets at a glance.
Leverage does not change your risk per trade, size does
A common mistake is choosing 20x "because the stop is tight". Your risk is notional times the distance to your stop. Decide the dollar amount you can lose, divide by stop distance to get size, then pick the lowest leverage that fits the margin you want to commit. Our position size calculator guide and the perp calculator in the Hyperfolio app do this math for you, including liquidation price.
Fees and funding scale with notional
Trading fees and funding are charged on notional, not margin. At 20x, a 0.035% taker fee on entry and exit is 1.4% of your margin per round trip, and funding over a few days can quietly eat a large slice of a small margin. Practical leverage checklist
- Set risk per trade first (for example 0.5–1% of equity), then size, then leverage.
- Keep the liquidation price well beyond your stop, not right next to it.
- Prefer isolated margin for speculative or illiquid markets.
- Re-check effective leverage after big winning or losing days.
- Remember that max leverage and margin tiers can change per asset.

FAQ
What is the maximum leverage on Hyperliquid?
It depends on the asset. The most liquid perps go up to 40x; many smaller assets are capped between 3x and 20x, and large positions can face lower caps through margin tiers. Check the order panel for the current value.
Does higher leverage increase my profit?
Not per dollar of position. It lets you open the same position with less margin, which raises return on margin and loss on margin equally, and brings liquidation closer.
Can I change leverage on an open position?
Yes. Increasing is generally allowed; decreasing requires enough free margin. In isolated mode you can also add margin to push the liquidation price away.
Is cross or isolated better with high leverage?
Isolated caps the loss at the position's margin; cross uses the whole account as buffer but can liquidate everything together. For high leverage on volatile assets, isolated is usually safer.
How can I see the leverage of another wallet?
Hyperliquid data is public. Paste the address into Hyperfolio to see its positions, leverage and liquidation prices without connecting anything.
